Didn't sleep well on Sunday night and took it easy during swim practice.

2250 Swim Practice @ 00:55:00

The afternoon got a bit crazy. I left early to look at a condo that just came up for sale in our neighborhood (gasp and even affordable) and after we toured it, went for a run down and around Greenlake. Right after my run, we were at our realtor's until 9:3o writing up an offer. I did not have a HR monitor so I do not have that information.

I have a 13 mile run on my training schedule but frankly, I just do not want to do it today. I am feeling stressed and burned out between work projects, house hunting and life in general...

But the sun is coming out so maybe I will rally...or not...

Today we rode from Eatonville to Paradise to get in an 80+ long ride that included a mountain pass. I was super nervous going into it because I was concerned that I would not be able to make it but Ruth's enthusiasm carried me through -- and up. Frankly I kicked that mountain's ass!

Once we got to the top though, it started to rain and we had a wet, cold and very miserable descent. By the time we hit Longmire, Ruth had a meltdown because she could not get warm. With dry socks, and bit of a rest, we finished the ride and the sun even came out for us. It was a very very long day...

We were supposed to swim open water this morning but the bad water report combined with rumors of a sewage leak sent us directly to the pool where we had a good workout.

Ruth's parents were here for the weekend again before returning to Georgia and she raced the Issaquah Triathlon on Saturday (6th out of 60+ in her division, top 10% overall...whoop whoop). We had a good time with them at the race and then spent the afternoon looking at a couple of houses so I ended up taking yesterday as a rest day.

This morning I got in a 12 mile run around Lake Union and then 1.5 times around the outside gravel area of Greenlake. I felt quite strong and kept an overall 9:30 pace.

Swimming does not seem to be in the stars for me today...Ruth woke me up at 5:42 and we realized I had set the alarm for 5:30 PM, not AM. So we rushed to swim practice and made it on time -- WITH my bag this time.

Got in a good distance workout even though I had to split the lane with someone because David was being a butt princess...

Busy day but managed to squeeze in a spin class. The instructor (Gina -- noting the name so I know what I am getting into should I have to take that class again) started late and was rather un-inspirational . Who teaches spin instructors that yelling "come on" over and over again is an acceptable motivational technique?

So I continued working through her CD to get in a full 45 minute workout on the bike.

I woke up BEFORE the 5:30 alarm went off and even had a moment to check email and get gas before swim practice. Then I pulled in, found a parking spot and realized that I had forgotten my swim bag that had everything I needed for swimming as well as the clothes I needed for work!

Uuugghhhh

So I turned around, went home -- changed and then went into work early.

So I took a longer lunch and included the Mercer Slough in my run. I worked hard to maintain a tempo pace for most of the run and jogged/walked the last half mile. Of course, my HR monitor decided not to work so I have no HR information -- except I know that I worked very hard and kept my pace at 8:30-9:00.

With 90% chance of rain, we changed our workout around to an excellent (in my humble opinion because it was my brilliant idea) brick. We went to the 9:00 Spin Class with Ruth's favorite instructor, Shari -- and from there I ran to and around Lake Union picking up Katie at Gasworks while Ruth got in a 5k on the treadmill. Ruth was very kind to me and took me out for Korean Food (Bimbimbop) and I then indulged in ice cream after 7PM.

The Tour de Cure went really well today! The weather cooperated, the signage and support were first rate and my riding partners simply exceptional.

Rolf, Jeff and I rode the 50 mile Tour de Cure route and left shortly before 9 AM. I made it up Inglewood Hill on my single speed! I was so psyched about it. Jeff had mentioned something about collecting dimes from Inglewood Hill walkers and that planted a seed in my stubborn brain that I was not going to part with that dime. And it nearly killed me -- I was sucking wind for a very long time after summiting -- my biceps hurt from gripping the handlebars. But I now have something to brag about.

Of course that pales in comparison to the chivalry and accomplishments of my riding companions. Rolf got a flat at the top of Inglewood and it took me a bit of time before I realized that they were no longer following me. Jeff stayed with Rolf and had his tire off and had almost completely fixed the flat before I got to them. Shortly after that, we came across another cyclist with a flat and Jeff was off his bike fixing that right away with Rolf's attentive assistance.

The weather was beautiful and the ride relaxing and fun -- we averaged about 10-12 mph. Rolf, who had never ridden more than 30 flat miles, was steady throughout the entire hilly 50 mile ride. And he was not even sore the next day! What a kick ass athlete. Jeff was just a wonderful riding companion and we had a lot of fun chatting -- and realizing how many scary similarities we have ... and he was happy to accompany me on the hill repeats we did while Rolf pushed his bike up two of the longer steeper grades.

That was my only workout today as I spent the day with Ruth's parents. I took them for a ride on the route so Rolf could see what he was getting into and we also adjusted his loaner bike. Ruth was actually done at 7 PM (she is really an amazing event organizer) so we were all able to go out for dinner that night. Rolf (with his new martini bike socks), Jeff (maybe Kevin) the Hindenburg and I are planning to depart at 9 AM and ride the best run Tour de Cure ride ever!

Please send good wishes for little to no rain...

Today's interval run was an excellent mentally and physically challenging workout. Ruth woke up at 4AM and went for her run shortly after while I slept in -- I figured that at least one of us needed to be rested...

So I dropped her off at work to help her with truck/supplies logistics and then went to Greenlake to get in my pyramid workout. (200, 400, 800, 1200, 1600, 1200, 800, 400, 200) with 400 recovery inbetween.

I ran the long side to the track for a nice warm up and was able get up to the 1600 before the phys ed class descended.... Even though I AM a 7 minute miler, I did reset my expectations so I would not start to feel too badly if I did not run the mile in 7 minutes -- and I did not. During my 1600, this guy appeared on the inside track and was ambling towards me -- he jumped out of the way but felt he had to yell at me to let me know I was going the wrong way. Now, he used the track as a SHORTCUT, and was not even running it but he did seem to feel entitled to write his own rules for the half minute he was on it. Ugh! Not that it added 7 seconds but I just wanted to take a moment to rant about him.

Then the class descended during my second 1200 and while I held my line on the inside of the track, it was a royal pain in the ass because they had no clue about etiquette - I had to yell track at one point to get one clueless strolling boy to move. After that, I decided to get my last 800 and 400 (crap, I just realized I forgot the last 200) on the inside loop of Greenlake.

Tonight I skipped my bike hill workout. Life is just a bit hectic right now and I opted for an oasis of time over dinner with Ruth. I am also now in day three of my sugar and alcohol restriction*. We had dinner with my coach on Sunday and were talking about weight and racing. I have gained 10 lbs since I qualified for Boston and that has had a direct impact on my racing. We also did strength and flexibility tests and while I am stronger overall, I am less flexible :(

Tonight I stretched using my stretch strap. I need a new one -- the one I have is a sash I had from a pair of pants and I tied it into loops. It is just a little short. I can sew so I should be able to figure something out soon. Or I will get more flexible and it will be easier to use :)

*So I have set a new guideline for myself. No alcohol or sugar before noon or after 7 PM-- except for special occasions. That will cut the calories from the soy lattes ( I switched to non-fat) and the non-fat but sugary creamer we put in our coffee in the morning at home. And it cuts into my nightly ice cream. I have stuck to it for 3 days now and I think it is a plan I can live with for a while because I am not completely cutting some of my favorite things out. But I am making a change.

Had a really good swim with Sarah today. She has such a terrific attitude and is helping me not only get stronger in the pool, but more flexible mentally. We had a couple of people join us in the lane whose speed was much slower and I was a bit disappointed although I was already working on turning it in my head into a good challenge thing blah blah blah.

After our first set, she said to me "this is a terrific opportunity to use the pull bouy for those 400's" (to even things out) and that was exactly what we did. Even though they followed suit and were still much slower, turning it into an opportunity was exactly what I needed to hear and an excellent reminder.

Today's Skagit Spring Classic Century was a beautiful and fun ride. It was sunny throughout and some of the views quite breathtaking. We stopped at rest stops every 20 miles or so to stretch and re-charge. It was not too hilly and we struggled only three times in the ride. Once in the middle when the road was made out of rough chip seal and we were climbing up in a headwind, I convinced Ruth to paceline with me and that helped. Near the end, we had a flat and beautiful tailwind and I just took off. In my joy, I missed a turn and Ruth ended up having to chase me for about a mile -- she did not have much left in her legs and that sprint was not something she wanted to do. The ride back was a bit unpleasant against the wind with a slighly cranky girlfriend.

Finally, the headwind during the last 5 miles really picked up and I crawled to the finish at 11 mph. During the difficult times, I worked on my attitude and turned my thoughts around into it being good training experiences. We were done right at 4:30-- when the spaghetti dinner was supposed to end and we were SO HUNGRY but I still had a run to do. I strapped on my running shoes and took off -- there was a gravel path close, and I took it to the end (slightly over half a mile). I figured the end of the gravel path was a good sign and I turned around to try to get some spaghetti dinner. The good news is that I felt quite strong at the end and did not suffer during my (shortened) run.

Tomorrow's bike sprint workout is going to hurt. Here are the instructions from my coach...

Intervals on Lake Washington Blvd:

Because the road is so bad until Mt Baker, I do a 2 mile warm-up from Madrona till Mt B, then start with 1 mile hard, 1/2 mile recovery, and repeat, you will get two intervals in until Seward.

Then go up the hill and do 4 laps of the upper loop hard, one easy, then repeat, back down the hill and 1 mile intervals on the way back.

Then take the upper loop by I-90 on the way home and recover after that. You just can't do the upper loop on Thursdays because of the weekly crit.

Time each of your miles and also time the 4 laps together (not each lap). Now you also have a baseline to see improvements.

Below is my training summary for the week. I put in over 17 hours this week...longer than I have in a very long time...

Saturday, May 06, 2006

Today was a hard, long but excellent day.

I met 4 members of the West Seattle contingent of the Viking Cyclists this morning at Chelan Cafe and we rode from there to Tacoma and back for a 65 mile ride with 4000 feet of climbing. Ruth is riding the Tour de Cure this weekend in California.

I was quite nervous about it but made the decision to show up and see if I could hang. I found out shortly that they are much stronger riders than I but they were also quite kind, regrouped often and taught me a lot.

As well as being a good physical challenge, it was good mental training too. The thought "I am the weakest rider in this group" came into my head too often and I worked hard to turn that into "What a good opportunity to ride with stronger riders who are patient and willing to teach me. I am going to learn so much today."

At the end of the ride, I continued on down to Alki point to get in my final 5 miles to make it 70. Then I bricked it and ran for 20+ minutes. My transition was unfortunately a little longer than 5 minutes because I was told to move my car before it got towed.

Then rode in from there with Jessica and Phillip from my Commute Challenge Team. It was a nice leisurely ride and I was happy to just ride at that pace -- did one hill repeat while waiting but that was the extent of me working hard.

Had a really good training ride after work today. Rode the Orbea home through Kirkland and over Juanita. After I went up and down Juanita, I did 2 hill repeats back up the steep side before heading home on the trail. I worked throughout the ride on keeping my speed up and monitored my cadence on the hills to keep it at 70. I was mostly successful and when I dipped below 70, I worked really hard to keep it above 60.

However, I compared it to the last time I ran this in March and realize I have not declined as much as I thought.

Met with my coach this morning to start to talk about my 1/2 Ironman and Ironman training plan. Not quite as painful as I anticipated but I learned that is because these workouts are more focused for the 1/2 Iron in June and that after that, it is really going to hurt...

Some takeaways:
  • Every long bike needs to be followed by a 20-30 minute run.
  • LEGS (Lunges, Add and Abductors) need to be added back into my weight training 1x a week.
  • Do CORE 3x a week.
  • I am to ride RAMROD with Ruth (I was hoping to be support staff) and train like it.
  • My runs need to be on gravel/dirt paths.
  • Alternate my workouts so I am doing interval, tempo and hill workout per sport. But never do those workouts back to back.

At the end of the session, I asked her what one thing I should change/do differently to be successful this summer. She told me that I need to focus on my mental game. I have not had a really good race since 2004 and it has been my attitude that is getting in the way of success. My reaction when I do not perform as I want is to get mad and berate myself -- that interferes with my ability workout and race well. She said I have a head of steel and while that can me really good in terms of discipline and focus, it also gets in the way. So I have some visualization homework to do.

Today we had a really fun ride with the Viking Cycling team around the lake. This is the first time I rode with them and it was Ruth and I with some really sweet guys. They would get a little carried away and take off in packs but always waited to regroup and were just great. Ruth went ahead of them when they stopped to say hello to the race director at Seward. I stayed with them and promised her I would do my best to slow them down :)

The ride sure kicked my ass. I was holding 23 on the back of Ryan's wheel a few times! And sat on Scott's wheel going up after Kirkland and up Juanita. At Kenmore, we stopped at Erik's because he offered to do a quick bike fit for Ruth -- so my HR interval information is in two sections. Then from there I rode to Gasworks while Ruth continued to Seward and back to get her mileage in. I figured that after meeting with my coach tomorrow, I no longer get to slack so I enjoyed the sweet feeling of it. And I was wiped -- but really liked riding with them!

Had a great time riding the Daffodil Classic today with Ruth (her 40th birthday ride) and Dave. We planned to do the 70 mile route (AKA 47 + 20) and I decided after 50 miles to sit in the sun and read while they did the additional 2o. It was a perfect decision because I felt happy and done with the first loop. Doing the other 20 would have been pushing it -- not a good choice for my recovery week :)

Did the Lake Sammamish loop today as part of Ruth's ADA training ride. I was surprised by how much that took out of me and I am feeling a bit pooped. Even cancelled out on our inaugural Lake Washington swim today. I was talking with my friend Katie today about how I may still be feeling tired from Monday's race and traveling. She remarked "most normal people would have come to that conclusion already..." I love the people in my life who keep perspective for me in ways I cannot :)

Today was a very long travel day for me as my flight from Boston left at 6AM. Ruth and I went for a run around the outer loop of Greenlake in the afternoon and while it did not feel like a great run, I did make it around. Tomorrow I am going to go on Ruth's easy 25 mile ADA training ride and then Gisela and I are dipping into Lake Washington for our inaugural swim. Yikes! :)

Thursday, April 20, 2006

There have been no blog entries in the past couple of days because I have not worked out since the race. I am still in Boston attending the eLearning Guild conference and am spending a lot of time sitting in very cold conference rooms. It is good that I am recovering because otherwise I would be crawling the walls. I did get out and walk around a bit last night to forage for dinner.

My leg soreness is finally beginning to subside but the last two nights in this hotel room bed have done a number on my neck :(

So this morning, I went for a very short swim in the hotel pool and stopped after about 15 minutes because of neck pain. After that, I sat in the hot tub to try to loosen the muscles. I will try to get in a workout later this afternoon during breaks.

I am SO FRUSTRATED. I went to the little health club here in the hotel and tried to get in a treadmill run. Lasted 1 mile before my legs said "enough" so I switched to the hamster machine. Made it there for a short time before my feet complained too loudly and then did the last bit on the stupid stationary bike. I know that I have not completely lost my fitness but it sure feels like it....

I am TIRED of this pain and quite homesick :(

Boston Marathon Race Report

I now can say that I ran the Boston Marathon -- one of the almost 23,000 who raced officially. While I did not achieve the self-set aggressive goal (qualifying at this race for 2007), I raced a very hard, honest event and learned a lot from the experience.

I went into it well supported by friends and family -- well rested after a couple of days in Provincetown and tapered to perfection :) Even race eve traffic and Expo madness did not stress me out too badly because Ruth was wonderful about managing it all -- even insisting that I rest in the hotel in the evening while she went to the airport to return the rental car and battle back through public transportation for our take out pasta dinner. One thing that was fun was the Reasons to Run promotion they were doing at the Expo. You can see mine here (# 15367).

We woke up before my alarm went off the morning of the race -- went for soy latte's, ate my oatmeal and made it to the shuttle buses that took the participants to the Athlete's Village at Hopkinton in plenty of time. Here is where I had my 1st learning opportunity for next time as I chose not to take a bag with warm clothing and supplies for the 3 hour wait ahead of me. I assumed that the Athlete's Village meant that there would be warm places to hang out and was quite wrong. I just had on my thin racing clothing and spend most of the time sitting on my race number as the only barrier between me and the damp cold ground. The sun shone intermittently and while there were a few moments of warmth when the sun came out, I was shivering uncontrollably by the time we started. I believe that not preparing well for the wait took way too much out of me before the race even started.

The race start was crazy -- we were corralled into areas per 1000 race numbers and it started with much cheering. Despite being cold for hours, the race start was HOT and I ended up shedding my dri-fit long sleeve shirt and gloves within 2 miles. Although my race pace bracelet had me ahead of pace, I ran instead with the crowd thinking that my pace was not fast enough and perhaps my watch was off -- and had my 2nd learning opportunity. One that I had even read (newbies go too fast in the beginning and burn out when the hills hit) about but got caught up in the moment. By the half-way point, I was 2 minutes ahead of my goal pace. Before racing, I asked Ruth's parents to pick a mile they wanted me to race for them and mile 11 was her mom's. I said out loud "This is for you, Erika" when starting it. This helped me to focus and thinking about her -- her kindness, strength, support and wonderful sense of humor carried me through the mile. Then there were 9 miles to Rolf's at mile 20.

My favorite part of the race was Wellesley College and the women's cheering was so much fun and energizing. A bit past that point, I was humbled by seeing a participant in a wheelchair -- no use of his arms using his TOES to inch his way backwards up the hill. damn.

Even though I carried my own hydration (water and nuun), I could not stop CRAVING the water and gatorade they had on the course and the slight pick me up they offered that my own did not. As the fatigue got greater, I started to walk the stops and drank both before picking up the run again.

There is a big deal made about HeartBreak Hill -- but it was the TWO big hills BEFORE it that really kicked my ass. OUCH. I wish I had trained better for the hills as they took more and more strength from me -- and my legs hurt too much to offer me recovery on the downhills. But HeartBreak Hill happened during mile 20 -- the hill I had already started to give myself permission to walk until realizing it was on Rolf's mile 20. I could not walk that hill thinking about Rolf and how hard he is training for Ruth's ADA event and the very hilly 50 mile bike ride he is going to take on next month. So I ran the entire thing inspired by him and made it through.

I ended up walking parts of mile 22-24 and really struggled physically and mentally despite the overwhelming cheering of the crowds. Dedicating the last 1.2 to Ruth was quite symbolic as I just wanted to quit and walk and committed to finishing it knowing I was giving it everything that was left.

My official finish time was 04:02:07 and while that was 16 minutes too slow to qualify for next year, I am already working on Ruth to run the Portland Marathon with me this fall to qualify for the 2007 race as I really want to do it again and next time conquer it! But my coach reminded me that my focus now needs to be on my first Ironman and I am quite committed to preparing well to race it strongly.

Went for a quick 20 minute run this morning -- my last one before tomorrow's race. Of course last night I had all sorts of weird dreams including needing to get something to run in at Fred Meyers while there was an electrical storm that closed down the place. And not being able to get to the start line on time...

I did an easy pace and did a 2 block sprint near the end to get my HR up a bit.

Swim was okay this morning. Still feeling a tiny bit tired and because Sarah was tapering for her meet this weekend, we did not push it as hard -- and I did not take the lead to push it and just coasted :)

Yesterday, I was informed that I made the lottery into RAMROD this July. Tonight, I made Ruth take it (not easy to convince her to do) because she did not make it and was quite disappointed. It is a good decision because we will still train together and I am certain that there will be some openings come July if I decide I want to ride it. Right now, all of our plans revolve around my races -- Boston Marathon in April, Victoria Half Ironman in June and Ironman Canada in August and now we both have big events to prepare for. My focus needs to be IM Canada and RAMROD training with Ruth will help me do that. I may just volunteer that day and be as supportive to her as she is to me -- and I would get to ride the route on the volunteer ride. It's a good decision :)

I am a 7 minute miler. I am even a sub-7 minute miler. For years, I have wanted to run a 7 minute mile and I have always been at least 15 seconds behind that elusive goal. But today that all changed and I could not be more thrilled. At the end of this morning's track workout, you could see the steam just pouring off of me and when I commented on it, Ruth said that am a steaming pile of SPEED.

I went into the interval workout just hoping to maintain a 7:30 pace for my mile intervals. After the first one -- faster than I have ever run a mile in my life, I thought that was a fluke and I worked hard on the second to make a 7:15-7:30. Then after that one, I ran the last to survive and still kicked ass.

Had a good swim this morning with Gisela and Sarah. Good but not great because I didn't sleep as well last night -- was nervous about my little 10 mile bike commute on my new Devinci single speed to work after swim practice. But it was a nice easy ride (I took it too easy perhaps) and I am stronger on this bike than I thought. Of course I have not tackled any long steep grades yet...but I am thinking about riding Ruth's Tour de Cure on my single speed with Rolf.

Had a good ride home and did fine until I hit the steep grade off the I90 Bridge. I started up the hill and it was too much so I veered to the right to fall on the grass. I was lucky that I was able to clip out though and walked it. Of course I had to be passed by some guy who thought he was being sympathetic when he said to me that the winds across the bridge were almost unfair. I thought "shut up granny gear boy...". Unfortunately, that affected my confidence and I panicked and clipped out again when climbing up the footbridge to the Burke Gilman Trail at Hec-Ed.

I would like to get strong (and light) enough to be able to handle the steep grades in my single speed... I do like not having a computer or other gears on this bike as it helps me focus on my riding.

Had my last full day Saturday Project Lead training today and got in a lift before the training. I am learning a lot in this program but the time commitment has been a challenge to manage with my work and tri training.

My Boston Marathon package came in the mail today. My number is 15367 and that puts me in the 2nd wave (12:30). It gave me butterflies and I am definitely terrified -- everyone is so much more excited about this than I. I am trying not to freak out too much about my knee and hope that the pain will not return during the race. Runner's World this week has an article all about the Boston Marathon and it mentions that they threw in another hill at mile 25 :( this race in addition to the 12 and 12:30 start.

Swim was okay this morning. Sarah came in a bit late so the best part was the 2 x 250's that she led (200 hard for time @ 85% 2nd one 90%, 50 recovery). We agreed that we want to do that as a 1,000 sometime to see how it goes. I managed to do the first 200 in a 3:00 and 2nd in a 2:56.

My swim with Sarah was AWESOME this morning. I spent most of the workout trying to keep up with her and at the end, our coach set us up to race the last fast 100. The good news is that even though she kicked my ass, I did hang in there and I managed to do a 1:23 to her 1:22 -- I was thrilled because she is such a terrific swimmer.

After a stern talk with my coach this AM, I am on running restriction for the next three days. The good news is that taking the time off did help my knee and the injury is not serious enough to blow my chances at Boston unless I do something really really stupid. Not out of the range of possibilities but I am going to try very hard to not get in my way.

So I did a spin class and SAT DOWN the entire time. UUUGGHHH. I did stand for one or two pedal strokes just to give my butt a rest during a recovery interval but other than that, I played with speed, tension and time to get in a good workout. This was a good exercise for me because the instructor is not exactly inspirational and I had to keep myself going. I sure miss Dina :(

I slept in this AM instead of going swimming. This is not a huge loss for me as our pool is closed for the week and I would have to swim at 24 (ick) on my own. Then I went for an aerobic run at lunch and struggled with tummy cramps and generally being tired.

Raced the Leprechan Classic 1/2 Marathon today. Ruth ran her first long race too -- 10 miles :)

I felt good going in and my coach told me to control the race, and not let it control me. I went into it with that attitude. As Ruth put it, it was the most "ghetto race" we have ever been to. There was only one single occupancy bathroom open and the recovery food was terrible. Donuts and green bananas. The distances were 1 mile, 5k, 10k, 10 mile and 1/2 marathon all out and back.

As I was approaching the turn around point, I saw the three men who were leading coming back and I got a little mixed up with the arrow markings because I was doing math in my head (never a good idea, especially when I am tired) and I turned around early. After running a bit, I realized that I definitely missed the correct turn around point and turned back around to find it because I just was not okay with not racing it correctly. I think it added .1-.2 miles to my total distance.

The good news is that there was a guy in 4th place who I had passed about 5 miles in who I ended up getting behind again during my mix up. I then made it my goal to pass him and I did again at about 8 miles.

This was not the smoothest race ever between the mixup and my foot pod dying 8 miles in and those were the moments when I felt the race beginning to control me. But I regained control and feel good about it.

I came in 4th overall and 1st overall woman. Not too difficult a feat considering how few racers there were (I saw less than 10 women total who ran the 1/2) but I am pretty pleased because I have never placed first in a running race ever! A bit bummed later though when they mistakenly named a woman who ran the 10 miles in the 1/2 marathon race and announced that she was first. However, I know that I won because I could see everyone who ran it as it was out and back and I am pretty thrilled with that :)

Really good swim this morning. The pool returned to water from its peanut butter state earlier this week and we got in a lot of yardage. One thing we did was a 500 for time. I thought I did it in 8:50 but now I think it may have been 7:50. If it was 8:50, the pace per hundered would be 1:46 (a bit slow) but if it was 7:50, the pace would be 1:34 (a bit of a stretch but I pushed it).

Got in a tempo run around Lake Union. While I LOVE my new monitor, both Ruth and I are disappointed to learn that the total distance is only 5.5 miles :(

The cool thing is that I was able to use the lap function on the monitor to see my pace per mile. There is a direct correlation between altitude and my pace -- and I need to work on maintaining my pace when I hit an incline. I warmed up for a mile, ran 4.25 at tempo pace and jogged/walked the cooldown.

I am turning into a bit of a head case right now and really worrying about the race. This tempo run was really hard and I would get frustrated when looking at my pace when running uphill. I just do not know how I am going to be able to keep an 8:30 pace on this hilly race. Crap.

Fabulous swim this morning! Got to swim with Sarah and she lead us in a strong 5 x 200 swim @ 3:15. We did the first three and then took a 40 sec break before doing the final two. She is really a lot of fun to swim with!

I did not get in my run today. Went to the gym to get in a quick interval run during lunch -- changed into my shorts and realized that I forgot my running bra :(

So then I planned to run intervals after work and got trapped by work stuff until late. I finally just let the workout go -- not an easy thing for me to do.

Happy Birthday to ME! Today begins my 40th year on this planet....

For my birthday present to me, I am NOT:
Swimming
Biking
Running
Lifting

Went out for lunch with some girls from the office and will meet some friends at Coastal Kitchen for my birthday dinner.

Today's long run was very very difficult. Had a 12 mile run planned and decided to run to Greenlake to calibrate my new foot pod and then around Lake Union and back home. I actually did not hit a wall until coming back up Stone Way and I could barely maintain a 9:30 pace on the flat of Greenlake (I now can tell my pace). I know that there are two factors -- one probably much stronger than the other. First, today is the 9th consecutive day on my legs. And more significantly, Ruth took me out for a birthday dinner and a show last night -- and I had several helpings of dirty martinis...

Because I ran to Greenlake, and then around the track a few time to calibrate my HR monitor. my overall time is a bit off.

For my birthday eve eve, Ruth gave me the Polar S625x HR Monitor! I am SOOOO excited. I am playing with now and getting to know it better but I managed to capture and log this morning's activity -- drinking coffee.

Went for a LSD bike ride today and did the Flying Wheels/ADA Route. This was the first time I actually LIKED the route -- I was not completely freezing or freaking out because of the ice on the road. Plus Ruth was feeling a little tired so she did not drop me and that helped my attitude. I was actually pleasant to ride with today.

Tried to upload my HR data but could not figure it out.

Swim was good this morning -- the 400 descending pull was hard on my shoulders but at least I was not trying to keep up with Pull Bouy of Death. Did a timed 200 swim halfway through at 03:07 and was not too happy with that. It should have been sub 3.

Dean's spin class at Pedal Dynamics was fun despite it being at 7 at night. It was good to take a class again from a real cyclist. What a terrific guy -- I am buying my new single speed commuting bike from him and really like him and his store.
